Common symptoms of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, or AATD, include:
- Shortness of breath
 - Decreased ability to be physically active
 - Wheezing

Many people with AATD are at first diagnosed with asthma. This is because one of the main symptoms of asthma — wheezing — is also often a symptom of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
Other symptoms of AAT deficiency include:
- Repeated lung infections
 - Chronic cough
 - Tiredness
 - Rapid heartbeat when you stand up
 - Weight loss
